About Orthopedic Specialists
An orthopedist diagnoses and treats problems related to the bones and muscles in the legs and feet, arms and hands, spine and other parts of the body. Sometimes orthopedic problems result from an injury during sports or after a car accident. Orthopedic problems can result from conditions such as birth defects, infections, tumors, autoimmune diseases, arthritis and diseases that cause deterioration of the spine, shoulder, arms, hands, hips, legs, ankles or feet. The orthopedic specialist treats muscle problems that are related to nervous system diseases such as cerebral palsy, paralysis or stroke.

What to expect when you see an orthopedist
The orthopedist will review your medical record and interview you to learn more about your discomfort and how it developed. Orthopedic specialists also examine your arms, legs and back to learn whether problems in one part of the body are causing problems in a different part of the body. Your orthopedic doctor will decide whether you need an X-ray, MRI or other tests to diagnose your problem. Medical, physical therapy and possibly surgical treatment will be planned depending on your diagnosis. Your orthopedic doctor may refer you to a physical therapist or pain specialist to provide you with ongoing care related to your orthopedic problem or surgery. Doral orthopedic specialists offer different treatments for orthopedic problems and injuries:
- Arthroscopic surgery
- Cortisone shots
- Hip replacement surgery
- Joint replacement surgery
- Knee replacement surgery
- Orthopedic surgery
- Pain management
- Steroids to help reduce swelling and inflammation
- Surgery
If surgery is necessary, your orthopedist will manage your care before surgery and will monitor your healing after surgery. Once the orthopedist is satisfied with your progress, you will return to the care of your primary and medical specialty doctors. You also may be referred to a physical therapist or other medical professionals to help your recovery.
